BEL unknown genes multiple defects. Concerning?
Hi guys first post! I today purchased a snake. I heard about it through a brothers co-worker they had BEL female they only wanted $80 for!!! I saw a cell phone picture and snapped on it!! Upon recieving the snake it has a few defects... No wobble, seems to respond fine and motor functions all seem well. But... it has one bug eye, one eye that seems sunk in more so then normal. (may possibly be my perception from one bug eye.) It has slight kinking or lumps right after the head but nothing too bad. Also most concerning to me is what appears to be scale swirling on the ventral scales a little higher than halfway up her body. I am looking for educated opinions if anything is to be concerning or if any of this would affect possible breeding down the line.

Why would you want to breed something that is not perfect?

Whether it can or not, whether it is genetic or not breeding should be about selective breeding and breeding perfect animals.

Obviously that's a very very cheap price for a BEL. And that's why you got her at that price because there are some obvious what most people would call, imperfections. Personally I think she's beautiful. To me that would make her unique and I would love her even more but I am not an expert on advising if anything will cause her problems I don't think so but somebody else can maybe answer that. I would not buy her to breed.
    Congrats [emoji173]

I wouldn't breed this snake, & you should have been suspicious when "they only wanted $80 for [this snake]". While she's probably fine as a pet, I'm with
Deborah...I wouldn't breed snakes with known defects. The eyes, plus the minor neck kinks will probably become more noticeable as she grows. Can't really
tell what's going on with the ventral scales...it appears to be where the umbilicus is, but why the crazy scales is anyone's guess, though I once saw a snake that
had a dorsal loop in it's body (in the spine) & the ventral scales did something similar....sorry. :confusd:

I bought it originally just because it was a beautiful snake. I have had ambitions of breeding but did not buy it intentionally for that purpose. But with wanting to breed sometime in the future I was naturally curious if this would be an issue, or of any detriment to the snake.
I do appreciate the quick replies and advice on both sides of my questions and concerns

She IS still a pretty snake, and as Jellybeans pointed out, also "unique"; no way to know about possible future detriments with any certainty, though when
you see defects that increases the odds of issues for both her & her offspring. Anyway, welcome...

Thank you for the welcoming! I agree she is very beautiful. I will be keeping an eye on her for anything concerning as my new pet snake! What happened to the snake you saw with the dorsal looping Boger? Did it make it or was it too bad of a defect? I'll certainly so some research on that.

If you see multiple visible defects on the outside-it would be logical to assume that there are also internal defects that can not be seen.

I'm guessing she's a Super Lesser with those eyes. Did they even tell you what morphs she is? Keep her and love her but definitely no reason to breed her since you have no idea what's wrong internally. I only watched from my phone but almost looked like that swirl was higher from where her umbilicus is. Is that where it is?
