    UTH temp fluctuations...normal?
When I went to bed last night (midnightish) the temps were 93 and 85. When I woke up this morning (sixish) the temps were 85 and 85. Room temp was the same as it is on a thermostat. The hot side is heated with an exoterra stick on UTH. There is a pocket built into the enclosure, and it is up on little pegs so it won't get too hot. I have noticed some temp. fluctuation (2-3 degrees) on that side, but never 8-10 degrees. The "cool" side is being heated with a human heat pad, and showed no deviance. I also put the human heat pad on a pretty sensitive breaker, to ensure there wouldn't be a meltdown if there is a short. The UTH is still functioning. Any suggestions, or should I chalk it up to standard UTH behavior? Thank you in advance for your help.

BTW: I can't stay off this darn page for more than an hour....I think I'm going to get in trouble here at work.

Your room temps are certainly fluctuating ... even though a household thermostat may read a constant temp at a certain spot, houses develop plenty of cool spots as you get closer to exterior walls, windows, and doors.

Human heating pads aren't made for supply a constant high temperature 24x7 and are subject to fault.

With a UTH that is designed to run at constant high and low temps 24x7 and a thermostat, any fluctations in surrounding room temps are taken care of.

I have several hundred enclosures all on UTH's and the temps are kept at exactly what I need them at 24 hours a day.

    Hope this helps.

I guess that I don't understand how the thermostats you guys use work...can someone give me a crash course. I would certainly invest the money if it can help keep my little guy happy and healthy. Thanks

Thermostats have a external probe that is placed where you want the tstat to take and measure the readings from. If you want you thermostat to control your under tank heater then you woudl put the probe on the the UTH or on the glass above it. On the thermostat itself you will program a setpoint, say 92 for a ball python. When the probe senses it has reached 92 degrees it will cut the power to the uth unitl the temps start to falll. When the temps hit 91 it will turn the power back on and start the cycle again.. This is for an analog or on/off thermostat

There are also proportional thermostats(better) the probe placement is the same but when the correct temp is sensed by the probe it will reduse the amount of power to the uth and then increase the power when the temp starts to fall. These thermostats are more accurate then a on/off thermostat:)
