    Greenville, SC Reptile Show
Is anyone going to the show this weekend? I'm considering making a day trip up there on Saturday. It would be my first reptile show!

Do some of these shows sometimes have breeders that sell young adult bp's (ie, female)? Or heck, I guess I could even get a normal female baby and raise it up. I do have a "new to me" 20 gallon long tank, flex watt and thermostat all set up (just need to talk to Matt to make sure I understand the thermostat completely) just begging for an inhabitant! hehehehe!

Although I am in love with an adult BP at my pet shop, just don't know if it's male or female and I really don't need another male.

Yeah, sometimes the dirt merchants have them this time of year, but they are nothing but a bag of problems that likely won't breed for many years.

Sub-adult and adult normal females sold at shows for less that a few hundred dollars are with almost all certainty wild caught animals no matter what the seller says. And even the animals that are at market prices have to be looked at with a skeptical eye.

Be careful, it's better to be safe than sorry. :D

So Adam, would you recommend I try just seeing if one of the adult balls that my pet store is seling probes out female? They're $50 each and there's one that I love the coloring and markings on. I think I've almost got them convinced to "loan" me the snake for a few hours to get it vet checked (and probed - but not telling them that).

Tell them you'd like to buy the animal and take it home to have it probed by your vet ... ask them if they will take it back for a full or partial refund or even a store credit if it turns out to be a male.

Ahhh, but these are the loony people who tell me that anyone who tells you that you won't sterilize a BP by probing it is full of ca-ca, experienced or not. So, I don't really want to tell them that I'm having it probed.

I talked to the owner, he's familiar with the vet I want to use and said he has no problem with me taking it to the vet for a wellness visit (I threw in the idea you gave me to offer them $10 to let me do so that they keep if I decide to buy the snake or not).

I've learned not to talk balls and husbandry with them, just go, look, don't get in discussions on the care of them (because they'll never listen - there are 4 adults in the same enclosure with no hides and no visible heat source). I am enamoured with this one, and to my untrained eye, no visual illnesses (clean mouth, no mites, a little retained shed). Of course, I'd rather get it checked out by the vet before introducing it to my home and I'm going to set up the tank in the bedroom, away from Kashmire.

robin, if nothing else a trip to that show would be fun. i went to that show last year and to a bunch of the other's that are put on by the same guy, and although they aren't huge shows they are usually pretty good with some nice variety. the largest female i have ever walked away with from one of those shows was about 500 grams--and i found her right at the beginning of the day and felt quite lucky about it. any larger than that and adam is right--either big bucks, wild caught or both.
