Welcome back !!!

Got a call today from my mother today while I was at work. She was talking fast and was frantic. I asked her what was wrong and she paused a moment, took a deep breath and said, "I found your snake!!"... I thought I was hearing things, but she kept repeating it..."I found your snake!" After calming her down, because she seriously dislikes snakes, she explained that she was in the den cleaning out our cat's litter and when she went to scoop out some fresh litter from the box out pops up the snake. Talk about freaking out someone!

It has been 8 weeks to this day that my Trans-Pecos rat snake had been missing. When I got home this evening I was pretty excited that he had been found, just wish It was me that would have found him instead of my mother. I felt so bad that she went through that experience. But now that I speak to her, she laughs about it ...she is such a trooper!

My little fella seems to look ok, although he is going into shed and feels alittle like jelly, if that makes any sense?
He is secure in a small tub with water, heat and a hide. I am sure he is freaked out as well, so i thought I let him be for the night and feed him tomorrow...I know he must be hungry! So I am wondering since he was found in the fresh cat litter, if that would have harmed him? But besides that, should I take him to the vet to get checked out?
Being gone for 8 weeks, I am thimking he was just hibernating somewhere and decided to venture out since it was alittle bit warmer for the last few days. Anyhow, I was very doubtful that he was going to be found, but relieved he was still alive and had not wandered into someone elses apartment.

I would just like to say "Thank You" to everyone who replied awhile back with positive comments and tips on how to go about finding him. Hopefully he will be ok and stay put. :gj:

Congrats! Missing ones always seem to turn up after you've written them off as gone for good. And they always act like it wasn't their fault. "Didn't you read my note? I just wanted to vacation across the house!"

As far as the cat litter goes, if it is plain/unscented stuff, I would think he is probably okay; just watch to make sure he poops fine after he's eating again. Highly unlikely he ate any, but if he did it could be an impaction issue.

If it is scented, especially with strong scents like the ones that tend to react badly with small animals, you may need to keep an eye out for any respiratory issues. I know some essential oils and strong smells can irritate the lungs, but not which ones or if it would be in cat litter anyway. Might be worth having him slither through a wet towel to wipe off any residue just in case.

For now I would watch him closely at home for things that would need a vet. (I.e. open-mouth breathing, wheezing/popping, being extra lethargic or limp when held, excess saliva, etc.) If he's just stressed by his little "vacation", adding to it with a trip to a vet may not be the best if there aren't symptoms of anything that a vet needs to deal withx especially since you say he is shedding. For now, calm, quiet, a bit of food and some water are probably the most important things for him.

I'm not sure what you mean by feeling like jelly (in less you mean somewhat limp or not gripping onto you when held?), but if he still feels that way after he has had a few days to relax and has eaten/drank water, then see if you can describe it better to us or call a vet to ask.

Once again, congrats on finding him! And kudos to your mom for not being too freaked out by his sudden appearance. I'm sure that's a story she will have fun telling going forward.

This is like those tales of snakes actually popping up in people's toilets, only this was the cat's toilet. :snake:

I agree with pretends2bnormal's post above: rest & quiet & offer a bit of food...would not rush to vet: if YOU don't see an issue, they probably won't either. ;)
Hopefully he's OK...just wait & see for now.

I knew he would show up sometime!!! Congrats!! And that’s the last place u think he would be since the cat goes in there often. Everyone got lucky today!!

I suppose that from now on, the cat's litter box is your job? :rofl: Your mom will never look at a litter box the same way again...:)

That's a pretty germy place for a little snake...I so hope he's O.K. & doesn't pick up some infection from that. Next time someone's
snake gets loose, I'll be sure to suggest looking in the litter box, if they have one. Yours is the first I've ever heard of being found
there.
