moss in a vivarium with newspaper substrate?
Just bought two small tubs of moss from the pet shop. I use news paper as the viv bedding. Wondering if i can just put the "balls" of moss in the hot and cool hides over the newspaper or does the moss need some sort of soil, ecoearth, etc substrate to root into. These are pictures of the moss... The black stuff is soil. Smells like it. Alternatively, what can i do with this stuff?https://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...ibb.co/xzYrSxbhttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...ibb.co/CBY738hhttps://ball-pythons.net/forums/cach...ibb.co/Fx4PkmS

Personally, I'd make a "humid hide" out of a large plastic food container (the kind with a snap-on lid, leave the lid on, & cut a doorway into the top for the
snake to come & go; put some moss in the container, fully saturate it & then pour off excess water, snap the lid- with "doorway" on, & show it* to your snake).
You can let him find it on his own, or you can gently hold him so his face is near the hole & he'll probably want to go in & check it out. :snake:

Damp moss on newspaper (under a regular hide) will just make a mess...your snake can have problems from being on damp newspaper, whereas the moss
holds the humidity & yet has plenty of air spaces in it...that's the difference.

Thanks Bogertophis. This is sort what i was thinking to do in the end. The moss on the newspaper didnt seem like a great idea but whated to check if that was also what others thought.

Actually I think the damp moss would also dry out faster setting on paper, as the paper could wick the moisture away from it. But either way, messy on paper.
