Defrosting Food - Time

Is it alright to leave the food (small rat) to defrost overnight & give later on that day?

I would defrost in the refrigerator, not leave it out.

Depends how long it's been out. The same rules apply to their food as ours. Bacteria develops the same with their food as ours.

I've speed thawed mine in cold water, lidded so the cat don't get in lol. Its safe to do and restaurants do it all the time. Under running cold water but still water while the rat's still in the bag is alright. A rat will typically take 3 hours, from thaw to feeding. I wouldn't thaw mine in the fridge with my food, Even bagged I like to be on the safe side. I then warm them up in luke warm water after fully thawed and roll them in a paper towel to dry them abit. Then feed. But I usually feed mine live cuz if he refuses I can keep the rat for another attempt instead of throwing it out. It's also more convenient for me as I often work late and don't have that much time to prepare his meal. And I wouldn't refrigerate a thawed rat. Definitely not refreeze. I'd dispose of the carcass. Most likely in the trash.

I put mine in a plastic baggie and set it in a cup full of the hottest water I can get from the faucet
Then I check it every few minutes by reaching in and touching it and see if it feels warm. Once the meal feels at least room temperature to a tad bit warm then I feed it

I defrost mine in warm water from the tap, treated with ReptiSafe. Used to keep them in an airtight ziplock bag while they were in the water, but now I just leave them in the warm water to defrost without the bag. This way, I can get some water soaked into the rat's body while it thaws out. At least, thats the idea. Then I just take it out, dry it a bit with paper towel, and feed.

I take them out of the freezer on the morning of feeding day and put them in the fridge. When I get home at 5:00 I take them out of the fridge and let them warm up to room temp til about 7:30, heat them with a hairdryer for about a minute then offer.
