Bad eye shed?

Hello to all,

My snake have something with his eyes. There is something like scratches. I'm sorry, I do not remember if he's shed off completely. It will be tree months. Is there anything what I could to try or I just need to wait to another shed?

Looks like a stuck eye cap. They get dented looking like that sometimes and it's usually a sign that your humidity is too low.

I can’t tell if there is a retained eye cap, but I would agree that dimpled eyes are usually caused by injury or too low humidity. If it is from humidity issues that aren’t corrected, it can cause permanent damage. I would let the snake soak in a container of lukewarm water just deep enough to reach his back for 20-30 minutes. That will help rehydrate, and if there is a stuck shed should help loosen it. You can also let him crawl through a damp towel or washcloth in your hands after a soak if you know it’s a retained shed.

What type of enclosure is he kept in, how is it heated, are you using a thermostat, and how are you measuring temperature and humidity? That will help us figure out possible causes and help you prevent this in the future.

Hi and thanks for reply. Humidity is at 60%, temperature range from 78F to 91F. Its heated by heat mat. Enclosure is big plastic box which meets the recommendations from this site.

I think I meets every what I need to. By now I build wooden enclosured specially for my snakes.

Is your heat mat on a thermostat? Also, what are you using to measure temperature and humidity?

When a pet snake sheds, ALWAYS check the shed for the eye-caps (to be sure they came off ok), also the tail tip (several missed sheds can result in the death
of tissue & loss of the tail tip, because the old skin constricts the blood flow from reaching the tip adequately).

I agree with Dianne- I cannot tell if it's just a dehydrated & crinkled eye, or a retained eye-cap...and please don't try to remove it (other than encouraging more
humidity by soaking & raising the cage humidity). It's best to have an experienced herp-vet check the eye if a stuck-on eye-cap needs removal...some keepers
have mistakenly tried to remove what turned out NOT to be a retained eye-cap, with severe damage (& blindness) to the snake's eye. It's a job for a professional.

I use laser thermometer and calibrated humidity meter. I try the trick with warm water and see what happens. If it doesn’t help I’ll find a good vet.
