Well it's not totally random but I have several progression threads going on. I have subscribed to my own threads so I can be notified when someone else posts in it. If I make a post into my own thread my subscription gets taken away and I don't get notified of subsequent replies until I go back and resubscribe to my thread. I've lost count with how many times I've had to resubscribe.
