Humidity help!

I'm having trouble keeping the humidity in my BP tank over 45. It usually fluctuates between 40 and 50. I use reptibark substrate and I have random sphagnum moss laying around. I mist it twice a day which brings it up but in a few hours it drops back down to 40. I have a 20 gallon high tank. Would it hold better in a 20 gallon long?

Have you covered the screen lid any? I keep plastic wrap over most of mine and a towel over that to help keep heat in.

I had a similar problem a couple months ago. I usually mist or slightly dampen a towel and place it on top of the enclosure.
The water dish alone is big enough to maintain the humidity fairly well but I still mist once every other day or so.
So you could try adjusting that? I also have sphagnum moss and reptibark so the towel and a bigger dish should help you. :gj:

I've covered half the lid with plastic and and a towel on top of that. I just thought since it was tall that made a difference. Maybe my hygrometer isn't reading right because moose (my BP) seems to be happy. Thank you all.

I dont know where you live, but around here in winter I usually have issues with the keep the humidity high enough. The wet towel on top of the cage helps. Another thing I do is take dedicated or old wash clothes or small towels, get them nice and wet and place one or two in random spots in their enclosure.

Yes, taller enclosures are tougher to maintain humidity.

What type of hygrometer are you using? If it's a dial style analog one they are wildly inaccurate (up to 15% off at times) and basically useless.

Having a decent size water bowl helps too.

The biggest thing I can advise is to wrap your enclosure in 1/2" foam board insulation. I use this on all my glass enclosures and it helps immensely with heat and humidity control.

I've started playing around with this too. It works pretty well. Just use a white towel or shirt. The first one I tried got dye all over me after it was in there a day or two. I've just been re-soaking it daily, and replace it every other to prevent mold or mildew.
