Cloudy Eyes?

What would cause a balls eyes to go cloudy like it is about to shed, stay that way for a few days and then clear up without shedding? He’s been more reclusive than normal so I assumed he was about to shed. From what I can tell, his eyes look normal now.

Normal shedding cycle. Snakes appear to "go clear" (look normal) shortly before they shed...patience my dear! ;) Their body provides some moisture
between the old skin & the new...make sure you keep the humidity up right now so the shed can be accomplished with success & not a "billion" tiny bits.

Shed cycle:

1. Redish Belly and possibly a darker/faded look to the snake

2. Eyes cloud over

3. Eyes clear - this is when you should raise humidity if there is any doubt you are where you should be, or even just to ensure a good shed. For my BP, she's usually at about 60%, but I raise to 65%-70% for shed.

4. 2-7 days later, probably an average of 3-4, the snake sheds.

It is totally normal for eyes to clear up, and not have the snake shed immediately after. It can take a few days or more before they actually shed.

What is humidity at? What are your temps?

Ahhhh...I missed the part about the eyes clearing and THEN the shedding takes place.

Temps are 85 hot 75-80 cold. Humidity has been kept at 68-70 since his eyes clouded. The cold side variation is from the cover I’m using. I’m trying to find the right ventilation to keep the cold side at the proper level by adjusting the opening size.

Humidity is good.

I would adjust your temps though.

85F is low for a hot spot. Ambient should be 80-84F. Hot spot should be 88-90F, but not over 90F. 85F will make it tough for the snake to digest properly.

Also, cool side is pushing it on the low end temps. I would aim for 78F-80F for the cool spot. 78F is fine, but you leave little margin for error. 75F is probably too cold.

Currently your snake can not get warm enough and has to choose between not warm enough or too cold. I'd fix that quick.

Don't worry, you aren't the first & you SURE won't be the last...;) That's what we're here for, to sort out the confusion.

Ok I will work on getting the temps corrected right now. I switched from a light to a RHP which helped with maintaining humidity, however I got the 40 watt and it isn’t putting out the heat I expected. It’s too far away from the substrate.

I should have went with a rack instead of tanks!

No matter what kind of enclosure you're using, it's best to test them out for a week before a snake moves in, so you have time to make alterations. Especially with
BPs or any snake that needs higher temps & humidity, it's more of a challenge to get it right. Or just get more snakes, so you'll get lots of practice...;)
