Adequate Enclosure for Adult Male

I'm in the process of doing some longterm planning of how I want to build my collection, and a Hognose is definitely on my list. This includes thinking about how I'll set up my cages and how they will fit in the space I'm allocating, so I just want to make sure I have all my facts straight before I get too far down the rabbit hole.

Most caresheets I find say a 20 gallon long or a 28/32 qt tub is an appropriate enclosure for adults (specifically males). Would a 2'x2' PVC cage also work? It's got more floor space than a 20 gal when you calculate it out, but obviously it's a different shape and doesn't have as much length.

I tried asking this on Hognose groups on Facebook but I got so many inconsistent answers (some said it would be too big and others said it would be way too small lol), so I ended up more unsure than I was initially. Just wanted to get some input from those experienced with Hoggies and their needs to see if this would be appropriate, and if not, what sort of footprint would be desirable?

A male can live fine in a 10 gallons, 20 is fine too but I would not go any bigger for a male. Males hognose get to 150 grams on average so it is small they are also picky feeders and like BP seems to benefit from smaller spaces in those times.

My male, Cosmo, is reaching his adult size at about 17" and 84 grams. He's in a 10 gallon and that is plenty big enough.
I can't speak about females since I've never kept one.

These random people on this Hognose group were telling me a 4'x2' because of how active they are and were saying a 2'x2' would be too small for them to thrive.... I knew that didn't sound right. :rolleye2: Glad I double checked over here.

Deborah, i wanted to ask you what size tub would be appropriate? My guy is just over a year old and currently in a 16 quart tub.

Typically when using tubs you can use 28 quarts or V35S (I prefer V35 S for females and larger adult males)

WOW! I did not realize that an adult male could go into a 28 quart tub. I thought if I put him in something bigger he would go off his feed. I am glad i asked you this Deborah. My guy is in a 16 quart right now but he is just over a year old. So its ok to move him into a 28 quart now!

I will tell you just like I will tell you someone with a BP see how it goes, usually it will go fine (reason I love V35S vs 28 qts is their very low ceiling). Male hogs are bound to go off feed either way and keeping a smaller tub can become handy when they do.
