'Weird' hides

I want to hear about the strange hides you use for your snakes! Personally, my ball python had a wide low grey water dish, until one day he flipped it over and decided he likes it better as a hide than a water dish...ever since then, it's his favorite hide!

When he was a baby, his absolute FAVORITE hide was a tissue box filled with crumpled up tissues. He didn't care about his 3 other 'real' hides, nope...he liked the tissue box best.

Anyone else have similar stories? :D

I used the small size priority mail box for a while with a couple of mine. Put the box all together then cut a snake size hole in one side. They fit in 16 qt tubs really well and they are free. When soiled, I just threw them out. However, I felt guilty after a while as this may be why postage is so high. The tissue box is a good substitute.

large round space fits a standard water bowl; the weight of the water holds the (fairly lightweight plastic) hide down, and snakes that are shy feeders feel
safe to grab food left near the opening (bonus: f/t prey stays out of the substrate!) The entrance hole could be enlarged for BPs, I used these for king, milk
& young gopher & bull snakes, etc. I do wish they made them in even larger sizes...

My other "weird hides" are emptied-washed & slightly-modified plastic vinegar jugs: I cut out the part where the handle is, keeping the capped top*. I use
these as "humid hides" for my corn snakes, with damp moss inside. *I can re-soak the moss when it dries out & easily un-cap the top to pour the water out.
You don't want to keep the handle part, because snakes can get stuck. jug is easy to wedge among their branches (they have cool & warm hides on the
floor also) and they seem to use & like these. :D You need to keep the cap on too, so they don't get stuck in that hole either...snakes do silly things. :rolleyes:

And btw, you can use gallon-size water jugs too, just not bleach or detergent bottles (for the obvious toxic fumes!).

I use Pringles cans with the bottom cut off and sanded until the sharp edges are gone. Then I wipe the whole thing out so there's no lingering salt.

Some of my snakes love them and they're easily disposed when soiled.

I use pieces of dried bark normally but I found a smashed up car wing mirror and pulled the cover off , sanded the rough edges down and ....

I've used the bottom half of take-out containers. The ones you buy whole cooked rotisserie chickens in work great. Just wash thoroughly, cut an entry hole and boom! great snake hide for snakes up to 500 grams or so. Get yourself a delicious meal and a free hide!

I also use the big, square, plastic dog bowls found at Wal-Mart for 98 cents. The ones that are hollow underneath. Once the snake hits a certain size I just lay some flat stones down to prop the bowl up. Tyson is jyst under 1000 grams and fits fine. My snakes love them and have chosen them over other actual snake hides. I have two in my BP enclosure and Borneo STP enclosure and one in my King's enclosure. Great hides for under a buck, and they double as a water bowl.

The Dollar General near me has plastic water bowls that already have side notches to make the bowl easier to pick up. The notches make perfect access holes for the snake to use it as a hide.

When mine was a baby, his favorite hide was a piece of "moss mat" rolled up into a tube. As he grew I'd cut bigger pieces to make bigger tubes, until he got big enough that it would flop over and not really stay in a nice tube, and then he quit using it in favor of other hides. He does still like tubes though.

Do homemade hides count? Food storage containers have been a great base for making custom hides out of! They work well with apoxie sculpt!

These have been Tapioca's favorite hides since day one, and I was surprised he prefered them over his Reptile Basic ones. That is until he outgrew them lol. They were definitely a fun project and he seemed to love then while they lasted haha.
