Is my ball python injured?

Today, I took out my two year old ball python to clean his enclosure and there is what looks like missing scales or even a hole in his skin. It has me worried and I thought I would look for advice here before finding a vet on the weekend.

When I first bought him at 3 months old, he had stuck shed all over from what I assumed were improper conditions. Ever since, he's had a discoloration on top of his head where shed had been stuck. Since he has been in my care, he has shed perfectly every time. He eats regularly and seems healthy. A couple of weeks ago, he shed in all one piece but one small piece on his head was still stuck on (same spot where the shed had been stuck years ago). The humidity and temps were fine and everything else looked alright so I assumed it would come off eventually or with the next shed. Two days ago, that piece of shed was still there. Today, I saw this:

The stuck shed is gone but there is this hole on his head. I'm not sure if he got the shed caught on something and then it got pulled off along with some of his skin? Is this something serious or is it a small problem that will heal with next shed?

Advice is greatly appreciated.

looks like an old rub mark/wound that is finally healing. the mark looks to be on the way to fully healed, so dont worry too much and dont mess with it; it's looking good.

keep your eye on it and it will keep getting smaller and smaller every shed. [emoji4]

the snake was likely rubbing very hard as an attempt to get out of their enclosure. be sure your husbandry is on point!

Agree with above post...he has rubbed off scales on top of his head...it's not red or infected-looking, it's in a "normal" stage of healing. You might always
see a scar on top of his head, but slowly over time should be less noticeable. Nothing you can do for it, but see if there's a reason he has wanted out so
badly (ie. cage too hot? etc) and minimize anything that is abrasive where he might have done this (& might do it again).

He's lately been getting his enclosure wet at night via getting water on his body from the waterbowl and then roaming around. It's causing him to want to escape, I don't blame him. He's on newspaper and paper towels which I change immediately when they are wet. I ordered a smaller water dish on amazon which I hope will fix that. That's the only reason I can think why he would be rubbing the lid.

Another "possible" reason that snakes act restless &/or get in their water bowl a lot is when they have mites...do check closely on snake & in the water bowl
for any mites that may have fallen off, to be sure that's not the reason. Mites are a serious health issue that need treated if that's the case...let's hope it's not.
Using plain white paper towels as substrate will also help you find any stray mites, if that's the issue.
