    Is it worth going for?
I enjoy the hobby and really like producing the combos I like more than buying them so I have several pairings that would be several year projects but want to know if you think its worth it....

    1. Male pied x 100% het clown
I know that all the babies would be 100% het for pied and statistically about half should also be het for clown.

    2. Black pewter 100% het clown x pied female.
    Again I know the odds

    3. VPI Axanthic x 100% het clown
    Again I know the odds

    4. Abino 100% het VPI x 100% het clown
    Again I know the odds

Is it worth taking a shot at these projects? I know they will all take several years to get the results I want....or should I "cheat" and buy double and triple hets to make my goals easier

Well, I think only you can answer that question. If you want to do it, you want to do it, so it's worth it. But if the end result is the most important part rather than the process, then maybe it's not. How much do you value your time vs your money? How many generations of breeding do you want to do to get the result you want? Etc.

Personally I think its to easy to just buy them. I want to experience the whole process. I just wasn't sure how people would feel about several normals that are het or poss hets being made when there are plenty available.

Honestly when you consider the odds and the years it will take no it's not worth it

You will produce a lot of poss hets which means you would need to keep them all to see your projects through. Keeping that many animals that may not prove and the time that it will take to prove some is not worth it at all.

Buy visual males for your het females and if you want to work on double recessive do visual to visual and keep the DH, or buy some DH from a REPUTABLE breeder.

Personally, I wouldn't attempt to create double hets by breeding hets. If you start with visual recessives the babies will be certain to carry genes from both parents, but if one (or both) of the parents are only het for a recessive gene there will be no way of telling which babies carry both genes. It's difficult enough to get a visual recessive animal even when breeding two hets for the same gene. As an exmaple, my first clutch this year was a Leopard het Pied to a Spider het Pied. Out of six eggs I only got one visual pied baby. When you add another gene in the odds are even worse.

You can go ahead and breed those pairings if you want, but buying visual girls to pair with those males, or buying double hets, would get you there alot faster. Ask yourself if you would really be okay raising a group of snakes for 2-3 years and breeding them for several years more only to miss out on the combos you wanted. That doesn't sound like a productive use of time to me.

I kinda went through this same thing and ended up with a pastel clown male and a killer pied pos leopard female in the mix. Even at that to get a visual have to raise a M and F to size and still playing an odds game, but better odds. Male clowns are reasonable now for the most part. Another factor becomes if you're snakes are breeding size or not.

Even 100% hets can be hard to sell, especially if you mostly wholesale. My whole program surrounds creating some sort of guaranteed outcome. This coming season will be the first that I will be pretty much in control and producing at least a guaranteed minimum outcome. I do not breed "maybe" hets. You only get one shot at it a year.

If you are going to go for these, I would start with the Black pewter 100% het clown x 100% het clown female to get a visual clown female to breed to those males instead of putting the males to the het clown for poss hets.

Yeah... working with gets scares me, unless it's something rare or obscenely expensive, it's better to try and get visuals to start with.

All of these projects just leave so many maybes.

Selling 66% hets just feels so dirty to me. With the leopard geckos I bred in the past, I would sell possible hets at normal prices because there was no way to tell without breeding them out. Sure I would say what the parents were and that maybe there was a chance at a het. Then it would be up to them.

I would personally start with the pied male from #1 and the female from #2. Then at least you can work towards getting some more visuals to mix in on the next gen.
