Died!!! :(
Well the snakes that I posted in the "inquiries" section regarding being scammed by Ray Torres of www.raysreptilia.com have another problem.. I went to check on them during my lunch break today, and 1 of them had died. It is really so sad, she gave no signs, that I could see of being ill. Except for the fact that she was mean, she would strike at about any movement. I figured it was from the stress of being shipped, new home, etc. I fed her on the evening of 9/30. She ate quickly, which seemed great. I offered her a second, but she would not take it... the next morning I realized that she had regurged. :( I then check the other female that I purchased with her, she too had eaten on 9/30, refused a second, and regurged. I do realize that these are two were for sure wild caught, and not cbb.
My concerns: (please help)
I have young children (5yo. & 3yo.)... do the potenial diseases in these snakes pose any risk to my family?
I have a Male Pastel and 600+ gram female arriving tomorrow. Are they going to suseptable to any disease from the WC females?
What can I do to insure the health/safety of the 2nd snake I have that is still alive, and (seemingly) in good health?
Your help and advice are very much appreaciated.

Re: Died!!! :(
Is it possible for a BP to die from simply being over stressed????

Re: Died!!! :(
Man sorry to hear about the loss. I'm sure you are pretty pissed off! I read your other post about the scam  ! I'm not yet an expert so I will leave that to someone else. But al lI have heard of in the way of passing dieses is worms. I would get the other to the vet for a check up, just my 0.02.

Re: Died!!! :(
I am sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. That's a shame.
So far as the kids are concerned, diseases that affect cold-blodded animals should not affect warm-blooded ones. For instance, an RI for a snake has to act differently than an RI for a human ... But bacteria is another story. Snakes can carry bacteria that hurts humans, especiall kids. But, the good news is that as long as they wash their hands thoroughly with antibacterial soap after the handle a reptile then 99.9999% of the time they're in no danger at all. They should be fine.
I am sorry again, about your loss.

No. That's not even remotely possible.

I would keep him FAR FAR away from the WC females ... different building if you can ... or get rid of those girls ASAP ... otherwise you could be looking at a dead pastel in the future and that would be a tragedy.

"Good health" is NOT something that can be judged by looking at a snake. I would get any other animals that you can to a vet with some measure of reptile experience tomorrow for a full workup ... blood cultures, cloacal swab, oral swab, lung wash, etc.

No, but stress can be a factor. Ball pythons do not die quickly ... that dead animal is carrying something that starting killing it a long time ago. I would get a complete necropsy as soon as possible.
Good luck ... freshly imported WC adult girls are not a fun ride for someone without much experience. You weren't planning on trying to breed them to your pastel were you?

Re: Died!!! :(
Thanks for your condolences...
I was aware of the bacteria, and the kids (actually only the 5 yo.) only handle the baby male after washing her hands, and then when done, she washes her hands and forarms with antibacterial soap, dries them, then uses the non-water (alcohol) lotion/soap. The 2 snakes...now 1 :( were in a separate room (quarantine) that the kids don't even know about. Oh, if they only knew :)
My concern know is that I have a Pastel Male, and an 04 female that will be here tomorrow... This separate room is the only place I can keep the new arrivals. I'm concern for their health, by being in the same area. Should I be???
Thank you all so much.

Re: Died!!! :(
Adam,
My plan was to breed them to the pastel in 2 or 3 years.... Should I get rid of the other female??? What about the rack I have/had them in?

I would get her to a vet for a full work up and have EVERYTHING on her cultured. WC females may seem cheaper at first, but in the long run they are not.
As for the rack, I would disinfect the heck out of it ... and then wash it, and then disinfect it again!

Re: Died!!! :(
I'm not sure that any vets in my area have any expierence with reptiles, let alone balls.
Believe me I wasn't trying to cut corners on costs... these were advertised as CBB.. I paid $175 for 2 yearlings, that only weight about 350 grams. I know you get what you pay for, but I felt I paid a fair price for cbb balls.
The rack is made from plywood, what is the best thing to use to disinfect it?
Also... the tub this girl was in seemed a bit tight to the shelf... and it didn't look like there was a a lot of space for ventilation, so I soldered holes in the tub last night, and put her back in... again seemed fine. Is it at all possible, that it was an air flow issue? I doubt it, but I'd like to be sure.
And... The girl that died, looked to me to be WC the moment I saw her, because she had a fair amount of scratches ( maybe a couple of scars), that I would never expect from CBB.
The remaining girl seems to have great skin, with no scratches... she might possibly be CBB (but I wouldn't hold my breath)...
I'm thinking about this... the Rack is made of Plywood... that shouldn't be a problem should it???
Thanks so much!

It really could be ... without a necropsy on the dead girl and a full work up on the live one, it's hard to say for sure.
If it were me, I wouldn't use it for a new animal as expensive as a pastel.
