My new baby - Kenyan Sand Boa! And a question on feeding her
I picked up a baby Kenyan Sand Boa yesterday. I'm thrilled, I've wanted one for a long time. The seller says she's about 7 months old, and she's very docile and easy to handle. After a lot of thread reading on here I'm keeping her on crushed walnut. (At least, I think it's a she!)
She ate last Sunday. I'm aware that one day after bringing her home is probably too early for her to feed, since she is probably still a little stressed, but I thought I'd try. That brings up the problem of finding her though. I dug her out gently and placed a FT pinkie on a lid I nestled into the sand so it wouldn't get sandy, and she had no interest whatsoever and slithered off and dug a hole again. Which is fine, I'll try again next week- like I said I'm sure it's too early. The seller said she ate frozen, but when she bought her and brought her home switched to live so I know she will eat both.
My question is how do you all feed your sandys? Dig them up? Wait till you see them? Just lay a food item in the tank? Is digging them up too stressful for them to eat? I've read you guys who own them don't have too much worry ornissie with impaction but I have the pinkie sitting in there on the lid for a bit anyways. Here's a pic of my new girl. My little guy would only eat if I put him and a pinkie in a tiny little container with a lid - then left the whole thing in his viv for an hour or so

My KSB (male, I suspect due to what might be visible spurs, but no idea honestly) eats pretty easily. Until recently, I would unbury him and offer on tongs. He usually struck and ate, though if he struck & wrapped he would let go and leave it... I offer once a week and have only had him refuse when he's blue.
Now, I tend to see him with his head at the surface like they would to ambush prey in the wild, so I just "walk" the pinky past his face and he strikes.

Yeah as pretends mentioned, the fun part of owning a KSB is learning to spot the little tiny head popping out of the surface. I went through hell and back trying to get my Male to eat normally on ft, he is now eating 2 rat pinkies and switching to fuzzies next feeding. Once I find where his head is poking out, I take the feeder (warmed with a hair dryer so the room already smells like food) and dance it in front of his head. He'll usually start flicking his tongue and if he hasn't grabbed it already I'll bop it on his head and he will go straight for it.
In my experience, their head is nearly always popping up somewhere especially if they're hungry. The trick is to get used to spotting it.

For the first 3 months, mine was never poking out (13-23 grams over that period). It was pretty easy to spot him thru the bottom of his tub though.
I might have gotten lucky if I do have a male. He has never had any issue taking F/T pinkies for me.
