Bitey, our first T

Yes, that's his name. Cody named him. We have our first Tarantula. A Chilean Rose-hair. Sorry can't post a pic yet no camera, but wanted to share the happy news.

You have been bitten (figuratively speaking) and don't even know it yet. Might as well start thinking about your next acquisition :P

Seriously - grats. Despite their ubiquity I love the rosehairs - they are the BPs of the tarantula world - generally mellow and tractable, handleable (just careful you never let one fall from a height - exoskeletons DO have a downside).


Look forward to seeing some pics. If you have Q's don't hesitate to ask - we have a few well-versed invert folk here!

Welcome to the addiction! You should watch out for wire mesh lids as well. if you've got a cage that uses them, you want to make sure that wires are acutally "melted" together where they meet. Otherwise T's can get legs caught and may seriously hurt themselves (aside from possibly loosing the leg).

Smulkin, in a way I'm the opposite. I'm not interested in the rosies at all, and I'll never keep one. Then again, my first T was a Chaco Golden Knee....might be more like keeping an Angola Python in terms of the comparision you made :p Basically the same temperatment, more colorful (which the angola really isn't) but bigger :)

Thanks for the tip, the lid to my case has a wire mesh, but the edges are enclosed by the rim of the lid on both top & bottom so that you don't even see the edge. I am going to assume this is okay unless you tell me differently.

And to think this all started with an aggreement from my land lord that I wouldn't get a pet that could pee on the floor. Do you think that he may have meant a gerbil or hamster? :omfg: OOOPS

I'm talking about where the wires themselves cross over. At any + point of wire crossings in the mesh, they should be coated or fused together, not merely strung together like a regular wire screen would be.

Thanks, you're right, no way do I want a leg caught. Okay I just went to take a closer look at that, they seem to have no real space between them, the mesh is so tight/small that the paint that they used to coat the mesh looks to have coated/welded them together.

You should be okay then :)

Just make sure your substrate is high enough so that if your T decides it wants to climb it doesn't fall far enough to hurt itself.

Terristrals climbing is usually caused by:
1) just moved into new home
2) something wrong with the substrate
3) you have a mature male trying to find a mate!

just a bit of added info :)

Btw shelby, go for the GBB :) They're hardy (keep em dry with a waterdish), colorful, and will eat and eat.
