What's next

So i find myself in the odd position of having several extra tanks of varying sizes. Enough substrate to load each tank, the plants for it, the cuc colonies to make it bioactive, and even a plethora of extra hoods and various heating elements.

Now the question is what to build them for.

In the past ive had and bred veiled chameleons, owned bearded dragons, african fat tailed, leapord, and crestes geckos. Green iguanas. fresh and marine tanks. Both box and aquatic turtles. And currently i have a hognose and ball python.

Any ideas? What is or was your favorite herp or amphibian and why? What is your next or dream herp and why?

Depends on the size of the enclosures and where your heart is but you can’t go wrong with a BOA!!!

i love mine and want more.

Or a carpet python which is probably next on my list.

But I say boa all the way!

You could do a really cool bioactive display tank for dart frogs or day geckos, something bright and colorful and fun to look at.
I agree, depends on what size the enclosures are and if you have a preference snakes/lizards/torts

I have a 5 gal cube, a 10 gal, a 15 gal, a 30 gal cube with wet/dry, a 60 gal breeder, a 32 gal biocube, and 2 full sheets of 3/4" birch and 4 sheets of 1/4" birch.

Lately ive really been drawn towards paludariums/ripariums which is a new style of viv for me.

Dart frogs or day geckos sound cool and lately ive been seeing these really cool micro blue geckos that i imagine could forage on springtails millipedes and isopods just like some of the frogs do.

Ive heard boas and carpets are known for their extreme defensive and prey drives. How true is that if you have experience.

A green tree python or a tree boa seem interesting as well but ive alwayd heard the same for them. Although there was a lrs that had a surrendered green tree python you could hold right out of the tank. She was sweet almost.

Sounds like you can go in a lot of cool directions.

Regarding Carpets, I have a Bredl’s python which is within the Carpet Python complex and he does not have a pronounced defensive or strong prey drive. In fact, I have one ball python with a much stronger feeding response who is constantly ready to eat and at the glass looking for more.

Just my 2 cents but good luck with what you set up.

From what youve said, and a quick google, redl's python sounds almost like a giant bp. That could be cool. I didnt even know about them. This is why forum posting is always good.

Glad I could help and, yes, I have learned a lot on this forum as well. A giant bp is a pretty good way to describe them in many ways except for their desire to climb or perch/bask in their enclosures and also the speed that they and all Carpets tend to move when handling. They are definitely more curious and speedy when they want to be vs my BPs which are happy to slowly move around me when out.

If you check out the Morelia section here you can see a lot of Carpet threads. I have one that shows mine progress from little noodle to mid-size noodle.

looking around I found carpondros... any one here have experience with them? are there risks in hybrids? this is the first time I have stumbled across these.

My Bredli is a lot more active when she’s out of her enclosure than the BPs. She knows she’s an apex predator and is going to go where she wants to go, thankyouverymuch! She’s also got a little more attitude than the BPs, but as long as you avoid her head (crazy head-shy), she’s pretty good. And a great feeding response.

My other two carpets also have good feeding responses, have great temperaments, and much more active than the BPs. Moresby, my Irian Jaya carpet is an absolute sweetheart, his breeder must have really worked with him before I got him (at a local show). He also thought a day-old rabbit kit was the most horrible thing I could offer him, the other two carpets took their first rabbits with almost no hesitation and are my garbage disposals.

Some of the carpondros are pretty, but I’m not enthused with hybrids, even within the Morelia genus. There’s so many lovely color morphs without crossing carpets and chondros that I really don’t see the point.
