So Smeagol had another big change [emoji6] I decided to make his substrate bio active. His enclosure is not 100 % bio active since he has no real plants. They are plastic.
Real plants need bright light and I don't want super bright lights on him. If I ever go fully bio active it will be in his big adult sized enclosure and I will let it get established and the plants growing up a bit before I put him in there. So that he will have plenty of shade.
Alas, his substrate is bio active. I used a thin drainage layer, screen over that, ABG soil mix, spaghnum moss and leaf litter. Released a bunch of spring tails I've been growing up, to clean up any mess or mold.
I already love the way the cage smells. Like woods. Not very strongly though, I have to open the door and stick my nose in it, lol.
Since one Gecko alone doesn't make much mess and I never really had any mold, I may have to give the spring tails a piece of rice here and there or other food.
Well, let's see how this goes. Being as OCD as I am I will probably still pick up any poop I see and easily get to, but it's nice to know that the hard to find ones will be taken care of quickly by the spring tails and I won't have to disturb Smeagol by hunting them down and moving stuff around.
Smeagol wasn't impressed at having to spend time in his critter keeper while I re-did his cage. But he couldn't have been to upset, because shortly after checking out his "new" cage he was begging for bugs, stepped up on my hand, and happily ate 3 Dubias.
Now he is exploring [emoji4]
