    F/t with bloody noses
I grabbed a different brand of rats to feed Lucy and when I took them out today I saw they had -massively- bloody noses. I've seen feeders with a dab of blood on their nose, but these had it smeared all across the face. Lucy seemed rather put off by the blood when I presented them, but did end up eating them soon after I left them in the tank and she had time to inspect them.

My questions are what would cause such a nose bleed in a dead animal, and how do snakes feel about blood?

Liquid expands when frozen for one.... second it sounds like they gassed the crap out of them quickly....CO2 burns the nostrils when applied quickly....

myoglobin. Essentially the fluid in the tissues. It is red due to the iron content. Happens quite often in the freezing and thawing of them. Nothing to worry about.

Mine do this all the time. No worries at all.

Thanks guys. I was mostly just worried by the amount of blood.

But does anyone know about how BPs feel about blood? I thought it might be appetizing to them, but when Lucy flicked her tongue into it she kind of recoiled.

My bps don't seem to care, but my kings, water python, and hognose seem to get riled up even more when they are bleeding.

My BP gets extra interested when the noses are bloody. She's pretty foody to begin with, but add the bloody nose to the game and she's VERY intent on winning.

If rodents are vacuum-packed before freezing, or thaw while in the sealed vacuum-packaging, it can force some blood out. Which I knew, and still forgot when I got a large vacuum-packed rat out of the freezer for my Bredli last week, and didn’t break the seal on the package. It was messy, but she didn’t complain. :)

My spotted python is a very flaky feeder, and one of the ways I can usually get her to eat is if there’s oozing from the nose.
