Quarantine Questions

I checked the caresheets and FAQ but couldn't find quarantine info. Should quarantined snakes be housed in a separate room? How long do you quarantine a new BP? Anything else I should know? Thanks for any help. :)

It's better to quarantine them in a separate room to keep any creepy crawlies or whatever away from your other snakes. A good two to three months is what I've heard... but not sure on that one.

In answer to your query - a seperate room if at all possible - of course you may have very few and very large rooms etc. You also may mitigate that depending on the source of the new herp. I try to follow quarantine for about 4-6 weeks if I am familiar with the source - if unsure or a rescue I would definitely err on the side of caution and tend to wait longer - in the order of the 90 days mentioned.

I can manage a separate room so I'll do that since my rooms are rather small. Thank you both for your help. :)

I keep them in a seperate room for the first week or two so that I can be 100% sure no mites or other creepers are on the snake then I move it into my herp room.

Hey Khara, this is just what we do in our house since we don't have a big "herp room"....oh I need to move LOL.

We put the new snakes either in our bedroom or in the back laundry room. The bedroom is for rescues or really stressed out snakes. We keep it very very quiet and low light and they stay in there for a long while, even more than a "normal" quarantine if they aren't eating well yet. The laundry room is currently housing Becky's BCI as he has had good vet checks and all that but still it's prudent to keep him apart from the balls at this time. It also gives him a bit more quiet than the livingroom would.

We feed, clean and handle the non-quarantined balls first, then wash, then repeat with the quarantined balls, then wash, then do Rauri the BCI last. The BCI exercises in our enclosed front porch, the non-quarantined balls exercise in the livingroom. Sounds like quite a process but it really isn't all that much work to try to ensure their health and it's just a good habit to wash after you handle even your single pet snake.

Jo, thank you for giving me details. Hearing your routine for handling and exercize especially helps me work out what we'll need to do. Sounds like we have similar space issues. I'll need to set up a sterilite container in our bedroom to test temps once my hubby cranks up his fan. If that doesn't work out I can test out the laundry area. I dream of a herp room (as well as a comic room but that's another post) too. :D
