Advice/reassurance

Hello! Just wanted everyone’s opinion on how I’m doing? I’ve had my female pastel ball python for almost 4 years now (she’s turning 4 in July) and her and I have gone through quite a bit together! From keeping her into a little bin when she was a baby to her tank as of now. She’s in a 50 gal Exo Terra with 2 hides, plants, a branch, water bowl, a uvb (even though not necessary), regular bulb on other side, automatic mister (which keeps her humidity around 50-55%). I keep tinfoil on top of her tank to keep humidity in as well. She has a heatpad hooked up to a jumpstart thermostat. I also keep an eye on humidity and temps with digital gauges. I feed her a medium rat once a week (when she eats since she does off in the winter). She weighs around 3000 grams now. I love her a lot and want her around for MANY more years to come, am I doing things right to achieve this?

Everything seems on point to me. Your enclosure is beautiful.

A 3000 gram female might be too big for a 50 gallon. Isn't that 36x18 inches? So long as you can keep the husbandry up and avoid mold or fungus with the mister than I don't see any problems. You already have 4 years under your belt which is more than long enough to get a good feel for her care.

I only worry that the tank might be a bit small for her.

Yes the tank is 36x18x18. She seems okay in it, I could upsize but at the moment she seems content with it. She’s around 4 feet now. Just thicker. I was worried it was too small earlier too, but she isn’t showing any signs of stress besides not eating which is normal for her this time of the year.

Would she be showing stress if the tank was too small?

Not at all. What you would see is not exploring the entire enclosure as much if it was too small. I think it not as bad of an issue as long as she is not over 5 feet. At minimum you want the length and width total to be greater than the length of the snake which I am guessing is about right for yours. They will explore and use the entire space you provide so while there is such a thing as too big in relation to the coast to heat and well space in your house, they do appreciate the space.

Visually your tank looks amazing and again having a 4 year old is an accomplishment. If you can make it to adulthood and go through the dreaded fasting in the winter without too much anxiety, I say you have mastered caring for a ball python:D

She definitely explores the tank at night! I used to be very anxious about her going off feed but now I’m really used to it and I feel relaxed cause I know now that this is normal!
