I've never read about anything like this. My ball python has two hides in his terrarium. One on each side. One hide is a reptile hide (picture) and the other one is cork bark. I had the cork bark hide placed on the warm side, and my ball python loved it. She never hid herself in the other hide. She's just a baby,s o she'll eventually grow to big for the cork bark. I tried switching both hides, but she still won't hide under the reptile hide. She usually spent almost all of her time on her warm side hiding under her cork bark, with her head exposed, or basking on it. Now she's always on the cold side of the terrarium, hiding under the cork bark and "basking". I have tried placing her under the reptile hide, and she usually stays for a short amount of time, before going to the cold side again. Does anyone know why she's doing this? Her reptile hide is a bit too large for her, maybe she's just feeling exposed or something.

So she wears the cork like a turtle shell right? That's why she prefers it. And she will sacrifice herself to feel secure. This is why we always say to have two identical hides so they do not choose security of thermostat regulating.
