Successful switch from mice to rats!!!
I just offered my boy Simon a f/t rat for the first time and he took it without any problems! He struck so aggressively that the tip of the rat's tail actually tore off. I've never seen him take a meal so fast before, he usually takes a while to get interested then watches for a while before he strikes.

Always nice when they switch! Are you holding the rat by its tail to offer?

Yeah, I dangle it by its tail so I can move it around without having to worry about getting struck if he misses. And also to keep the head close to him because if I don't he'll try to swallow it sideways or starting from the tail, which doesn't work super well.

Get tongs if you don't have them. Dangling it by hand is an accident waiting to happen. If you pinch their shoulder scruff you can hold them at a natural angle and help your chances of switching future live to ft eater without problems too.

I did initially use tongs but I kept dropping the mice when I did it that way so I switched to just using my hand. But you're absolutely right, I should get a better pair of tongs and try to feed him that way to prevent an accident. Thanks for the advice :)

Yeah, get a pair of long forceps of that's not what you have, I think I got one pair of Amazon for around $7-9 and I picked up a second pair at repticon for $6 I think. They're both stainless and I actually think the repticon ones are a little better quality. You can find them pretty cheap.

Congrats on the switch! Love it when I hear success stories.
