Feeding

Do you feed in the enclosure or a diffrent place? Also would like to know why.

In the enclosure because there is less stress for the animal and you should avoid moving an animal in feed mode unless you want to get tagged (feed mode starts hours before feeding and stops hours after feeding)

It applies to any species from venemous to retics to BP.

Always in the enclosure. Less stress, much less chance of regurgitation from being moved/stress, and snakes don't really learn that hands=food unless you've been handling rats without washing your hands. If my guy is acting hungry- peeking out of a hide, tongue flicking, S-shaped curl, then I don't try and pick him up. Its all about knowing your snake and their body language and habits

Moving the snake prior to feeding can stress the snake, which can be reason for refusals.

Assuming the snake eats:
Moving the snake out of the feeding enclosure is a good way to get bitten, since the snake is likely still in feed mode.
Moving the snake can also lead to the snake regurgitating.

I have always fed inside the snake's enclosures, and have NEVER been bitten inside any of my enclosures.
I also have never had any substrate related issues due to feeding inside the enclosure. Snakes digest fur and bone, a little dirt won't hurt.

Feeding out of the enclosure in a separate container is very old school. It was believed that only breeders fed in the enclosure because of the time it would take to feed a very large collection out of enclosure. Some also believed it would cause the snake to associate anything coming into with tank as food. Turns out, it works better feeding them in the enclosure. This is why so many recommend it, myself included. It is easy on all involved. The snake, the keeper, less chance of getting bitten or stressing out the animal with a possible chance of regurgitating. Trust me, I feed out of cage way too long, with a very large boa collection. Oh it can definitely be done, but why when it’s just better for the whole situation to just feed in cage. 😉
