Heat lamps and summer!

In the summer months do you need to heat your cage, or dose it stay at the right temperature? I live in california and it gets really hot. I havent had a snake that long I was just wondring.

Would love to be able to help, but as of lately it seems us northerners don’t get a summer

I keep my Che going all year long.

Do you have to get a heat bulb with less watts or doe it stay the same?

You need to regulate any heat source with a Thermostat. That way you dont have to worry if it gets to warm in the house as the Tstat will shut the heat source off. To answer your question yes, a 100 watt CHE running in a house thats 70 is a lot different than a 100 watt CHE running in a house thats 80. You can cook the heck out of the enclosure.

Yes that what i was thinking we keep our snake cage temperature at the recommended heat just got to thinking about the summer and havent seen any thing posted i figured i would ask i know evreyone isnt from the same place. Going to stock up on diffrent watt bulbs before hand thanks!

Regardless of where you live it really depends on the ambient temperature in the room your snake is kept in.

If the temps in the room are always between the high 70s and the mid 80s you can get away with just providing belly heat.

Otherwise, you'll need an additional heat source, regulated by a thermostat or rheostat. Properly regulated heat sources will not fluctuate and will not run the risk of dangerous heat spikes.

I don’t turn the thermostats/heat sources off during the summer. That way I don’t have to worry about remembering to turn things on if we get a chilly evening or when the weather changes.

Mine stay on year round as well. That way I know my temps are regulated and stable.

Do you have an A/C, do you run it?

If so, chances are you need your heat source running.


As to some things said if your home stays in the high 70s to 80s no other heat would be required. There are plenty of keepers with large collections that do nothing more than offer proper ambient temps.

I have a heated snake run. Rarely do any of my snakes use their hotspot. I'm sure if I turned them off they wouldn't miss a beat. My room is kept at 77 with peaks of 80-82.
