I see some breeders separate the females from the group before they give birth. I've done it in the past as well. However I was wondering what size tubs you are using for this. I've been using full size mortar tubs for this. I was hoping to use something smaller per female. So what are you using? Can you share pictures of your setups as well? Thanks everyone for your help.

    I use those https://www.freedombreeder.com/product/fb10-5

I actually have a freedom breeder rack that has the regulars mice tubs and those to birth rats (foot print is the same, height is different)

    Here's my nursing rack:

I bought this rack from someone down in LA, so I'm not sure where he bought the tubs or exactly what kind they are. They're probably bus tubs of some sort, and they're about 15 x 11 x 6, I think. Just a bit shorter than the 15qt tubs I use for small snakes.

It's enough room for a single momma and her babies.

I was skeptical about putting them in something so small when I first got this rack, but I gave it a try and my girls are doing great in them. These tubs need to be cleaned a little more often than a larger tub would (I usually clean these every 3-5 days, depending on how many babies there are and how messy the mom is.) but it's good for nursing because they don't have to go far from their babies to get food and water. I move them all to bigger tubs as soon as the babies open their eyes, so these will be going out soon. I like to give them more room before they start to run and jump.

I have two ARS racks, one has the birthing tubs:

The other has the grow out tubs:

The good thing about ARS is that you can buy just one level at a time. Or you can just buy the tubs and build your own. I chose a shorter stack with fewer levels because a full stack wouldn't fit in my basement because of the low ceilings. When I just started out my first stack was just a few levels, basically what I could afford at the time. Once my operation grows I'm planning on getting a spare rack so I can power wash the dirty ones.

I'm about half way finished building two 7 tub rat racks with auto watering system (27.9 x 20.3 x 6.3 - 27 liter/7 gallon tubs). Instead of building a completely separate rack for weanlings, my plan is to use some of the leftover 1/2" x 1/2" wire screen to make ramps they can climb up to the food and water. Do you guys think that will be alright?
