2017 California Red Sided garter...special story.
This guy was the runt of the litter back on 8/23/17 and took a long time to start feeding. I thought he was a candidate for "failure to thrive" until I started picking him up and feeding him by hand. I basically had to "tease feed" him while in my hand. He has been feeding on his own for some time and has started really making strides. He was slated as a holdback bc of his superior coloration and patterning.https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...age_543046.jpg

Thanks John. I kept saying to myself " this guy is too handsome to lose". I was amazed when he started taking sliced salmon pieces from my hand as I held him.

Thank you Sau, all of this litter was really cute. The mortality of some is still a mystery. The dam had 24 babies and 12 didn't survive. I do have some hypotheses on why, to help prevent it in the future.

Thx B! He was hard to get going but I guess the will to survive won out. My experience with garter snakes is amazing and I have several new projects with them coming soon.

Pretty little snake! I can relate to your story about him: years back I added some hatchling corn snakes (siblings) to my household, & by some strange coincidence they
came from a guy who breeds mostly garter snakes. Anyway, I've bred & raised my own corns in the past, but the ones I got from him were strange feeders...they didn't
feel "secure" enough to eat unless they were in my hand, at which point they fed well & thrived. I didn't have to tease them, they just wanted to feel snug in my hand?
Just when you think you've seen it all, eh?
