My BP dug a small ditch yesterday, why?

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...1f969b5f5c.jpgSo for the last few days Pylox has been digging and tunneling around in his enclosure with full body coverage, this morning I noticed that he had left a really precisely dug ditch under the log in his enclosure. I kinda wanna know why, could this be a nest?

This is normal behavior. Ball pythons are a terrestrial species that in the wild live underground in termite mounds. They love to dig and burrow.

Ball Python's in the wild live underground in little burrows, so this is normal. Though it's possible you don't have a dark enough hide that he can feel safe in, check on that!


If you have an UTH make sure the glass/plastic of the enclosure isn't getting hot enough to burn him since he's probably against it.

If you have a heater under the tank, maybe the snake is cold and burrowing down to the heat source.
If you have only top heat, maybe the snake is hot and burrowing to get away from the heat.

I always check temperatures first, when I notice behavioral changes in a snake.

Ok, thanks for the replies everyone! The thing I didn't mention in the original post was that after digging the burrow (which is on his hot side as Godzilla guessed), he's never touched that burrow, he keeps hiding in his coconut shell. And calm down, the temperature on the surface of the tank floor is a mere 31°C now.
