Can you pour boiling water in a glass tank to get rid of mites?

So basically, I saw a mite in my BP's tank a few days ago, and he's currently in his storage box so I can clean his enclosure of mites. I'm soaking his hideboxes, branch, etc. and I was wondering... well, you read the title.

I'd be careful ..

I'd be scared of cracking the glass or ruining the glue seal around the edges .

Maybe wrong though

Nah, I've "preheated" the tank (I left it in the sun for a few hours). I poured the water in and everything went fine.

If you found one adult mite, you can pretty well bet there will be more. You need to treat the snake cage with something like Provent-A-Mite for at least 2 months until you are sure the mites are gone. Otherwise, in a few week to a month, you start seeing more mites. Remember, mites arent confined to the cage alone, they can travel far in the course of a night but if you only have one snake, then i would bet, they would stay fairly close to 'dinner'.

Five seconds of heat at 135*F or higher will kill mites and eggs. Boiling water will certainly do it, as will a steam cleaner/sanitizer. I would just be worried about cracking the glass or melting seals if you use boiling water.

If you put the tank in the sun and turned it upside down on a black piece of plastic, the air temp inside may just get hot enough to do the job for you.

Provent-A-Mite and a heat gun. Mites are to a snake what bedbugs are to people. If you can’t treat it, seal it up and throw it away. One 90 day concerted effort is better than a never-ending 30-day reinfestation.
