anyone else think temperature probes are a nightmare?

Impossible to get them to stay in place. Even if you do get them to stay in place you have to worry about your snake brushing the substrate away so that there is no insulation and the area gets too hot. If you clear the substrate in that area the snake can poop in it and there is nothing to absorb the poop/urate. Clearing the substrate also could lead to the snake inadvertently brushing substrate back over it, lowering the temperature.
This is the only thing I do not like about snakes. I use a temp gun to make sure the hot sides are the proper temperatures several times a day because the probe is always getting banged around or substrate is getting pushed over the undertank heater.

The probe shouldn't be getting banged around, it should be outside the enclosure.

There are a few ways and a few places to situate the probes but for my part I usually use a hot glue gun to stick the probe down . The hot glue holds it in place until you need to move it for whatever reason by gently pulling or cutting it free .

My thermostat probe for the hot side has the wire running under the substrate under a rock, with the probe wedged between the rock and his hot hide (I use a CHE not an UTH) only time it is a problem is when he decides to lay on it - which luckily he does not do often or for long amounts of time. But, yeah - making sure everything stays where I put it is a pain. Thank goodness for IR guns

I have the thermometer probes either hot glued or drilled in place. I have an AP cage and custom drilled some small holes in the bottom so that each hide can have a digital probe too for measuring ambient temp. does not matter if he lays on those

I have no issues with a thermometer probe being inside of the enclosure. It's when thermostat probes for UTHs are inside that I start twitching and recommend going another, safer, route. :cool:

I silicone my Acurite Thermometer probes down under the substrate with Bath & Tile Silicone if in a Glass Tank & I use a 1/8 screw (theres a tab) to hold it (covered in Silicone) in my PVC enclosures.
My Thermostat Probes Hang under my RHP's and when using a UTH they go between the UTH & enclosure. .

I've tried hot glue gun. My snakes end up dislocating it anyway. They like their hot hides too much. Most of the time I end up wedging the thermometer probe between the botton of the warm hide and the bottom of the tank. It usually works, but I wish I could find a better solution.

Hot Glue Snaps off sometimes, Silicone is like rubber and it can move without braking loose. Just my 2 cents [emoji4]

Nope, no problems don't overcomplicate and don't keep the thermostat probe in the enclosure....
