Wondering about

Seems a bit large but why don't you just consider cluttering up the enclosure? Using some solid objects like stones, large stoneware water bowl, branches and logs. Extra hides would be good also. How are you planning on heating the enclosure?

I would like to use a mat but know nothing about them. My bp has a heat light that I'm not really liking it.

Well, it's much better to have the heat mat to create a warm spot for the bp. The heat mat will have to be connected (plugged) to a thermostat and not plugged directly into a outlet. The actual circulating temperature will then have to be considered and that is where you need to consider the room temperature and the best way to warm the ambient temperature in the enclosure. The heat lamp can be connected to a dimming device or a rheostat. Are you considering a smaller enclosure or is this definitely what you will be working with for the little fellow?

No.. I am willing to get him a smaller one. This is just one I had from an old turtle that I had years ago. I did the water bleach clean up. I can run up to pet store to get what I need for the little guy.

I can't really tell what size that is, I'm guessing a 20L.

You will need a heat mat & thermostat, no lights they dry the air.
Several hides, one at each side (hot side/cool side). Anything you use, make sure it can be cleaned easily.

I'd cover 3/4 of the screen lid to keep humidity in. You will also need locking clips for the lid as well.

Covering 2-3 sides (aquarium backgrounds, put on the outside) will increase the feeling of security, and look nicer to you, IMO.

As long as there's plenty of cover and hiding spots, it will be fine. The wild is pretty large, after all.
