Popping Hatchlings

I've a Spider and a Pastel hatchling that were sold to me as "unsexed". Just ordered my first probing kit but I went ahead and popped both. Not seeing hemipenes sticking out though i see two red marks. I've a male lesser that I've popped which was obviously male and another female which didn't have those red marks. Have you guys seen the red marks on female BPs before? Popped a few times and I still can't see anything sticking out!

Typically when I see the red spots, I assume it is male. You don't want to pop too many times to prevent injury. Give it some time off, maybe a week or so, then pop again and see if there is any difference.

If your landmarks are right on the animal and the proper technique is utilized you will be able to determine sex in hatchlings especially. Red spots visible without any protrusion most likely are the scent glands of a female as opposed to a hemipene expression. Some animals, including hatchlings may be more anterior or posterior thus its always important to recheck periodically.

I want to say yes but it's hard to tell bc i think your landmarks are off a bit. By that , i see you seem to be putting alot of pressure anteriorly of the cloaca and could be pushing the hemipenes down and into their sheaths. The hemipenes are located in the tail so your mild pressure should be exerted mid tail and the finger should roll forward. Otherwise you may wind up pushing the hemipenes back down or simply just not allowing for expression.

Sure. YW. Be sure to place your non dominant hand/finger onto the cloacal plate/scale to be sure of the proper landmarks. That way it should be much easier to determine the correct sex and you really don't need alot of pressure at all.
