Dumeril boas
Hi guys, does anyone here on BP.net have experience with dums. I heard they don't get that big and are very friendly. I also heard that they take about 3 to 5 years to reach sexual maturity. Do they grow slow or not.
Could he fit in this cage for now and can I upgrade later and when?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...f8ac15795b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...e87ab4797a.jpg

I'm NOT a dum owner but I have done quite a bit of reading because I'm interested in one. All the reading I've done shows they will average between 5-8' and be rather thick bodied. As I said, not an owner but have done some research. There is a Dumerils Owner group, or something like that, on Facebook you can ask them too..

Like mentioned, Dumerils get to 5-8' on average. They are a thick body snake with good girth. My little girl is about 1.5 years old and just over 3'. She is pretty laid back but does love food.
As for fitting in the cage, no idea what size cage that is. Looking at it, it seems kind of narrow. Heavier bodied snakes need wider cages. And no idea on the heating etc. You need to give more info about the enclosure before anyone can really answer it.
For example, i have my 3' girl in a 4x2x15" cage with shelf and she uses all of the cage usually during night. And yes, she even climbs all over her shelf.

Yes he cage is pretty narrow
The dimensions are 90cm L 35cm width 40cm H
I was wondering if I could like keep him as a baby in this cage for now and upgrade when he grows as I heard hey are slow growers reaching sexual maturity at 3 to 5 years.

I dont know how slow everyone elses dum grows but my girl was around 12" when i got her back in Sept and now almost a year later, she is just over 3'. I mean i guess you could, as long as you can meet the husbandry needs in that cage. I see people with 7' boas crammed into 4x2 cages so i guess anything is possible lol.

Yeah - I hate that the local reptile shop has several 8'+ snakes in 36"x 24" enclosures.

Oh i was more directing it at owners who do it. Pet shops i can see it as they just want quick sales and dont really care, not that i condone it either. But you see the people who buy snakes knowing dang well its going to get to 6'+ and then complain they dont have the cash to buy it a decent home.....why did you buy the snake in the first place.....you had years to plan/save for a bigger house, there is no excuse...well unless you own a retic, they grow faster than you can blink haha. Anyways, sorry /rant off.

Re: Dumeril boas
My dum is 4 years old and about 5'10". Females get much larger than males. Males stay in the 5~6' range, and females tend to be in the 7~8' range.
My female fit well in about a 3'x18" enclosure until she was around 3 years old.
Also, males can reach sexual maturity earlier, but that doesn't mean they stop growing. Dums grow until they're 5~6 years old actually, before the growth rate tapers off a bit. But they technically continue growing their entire lives. So yes, they grow slowly relative to other boa species.

Yeah, that size will work for the first ~3 years of its life. I'd personally start out with a yearling or older though, because babies are known to be hard to get started on eating.

Those are his "show" animals - he also does the birthday party thing with them. Makes me sick, but he's the only guy in town...
