I've joined some Boa Constrictor FB groups since a lot of the old sites are down or otherwise dead. It's nice that there are some really nice and knowledgeable people there. But OMG there is way too much toxicity. So many super elitest know-it-alls. Even when those folks are right on the information they come across as rude and harsh and you don't want to acknowledge them out of spite.

Glad there's at least this tiny group of folks here who aren't jerks about stuff.

i don't use facebook nor do i go on many other forums, but i feel our community lives up to its tagline: "the friendliest online community..."

everyone is welcoming and actually tries to help and be informative. i can only imagine what facebook has become nowadays (i deactivated over 5 years ago)...it's nice to come here and get away from the "noise".

Facebook isn't the issue, that's just the medium people are using to spread their vitriol. It's the moderation and policies (or lack thereof) by the group admins that sets the tone for each group.

I lurk on more forums than I would ever join partly because of that issue.

Was reading through a thread on a tarantula forum the other day, and the old hands were complaining how newbies use common names for their spiders, and somehow worse, they will use both the common name and the Latin. God forbid, a newbie mistakenly capitalizes the species part of that binomial. A few pages later, the thread devolved into a free for all making fun of people for their Latin pronunciation.

Wow. I felt like we should be holding delicate tea cups with our pinkies extended.

I see a lot of drama on the FB sandboa group I read. I agree with bcr229 about policies and moderation.

I deactivated my FB account about 4 years ago and haven't thought about re-joining once. Too much drama and BS for me. My brother and my sister-in-law send me any pics of my niece that they post, so I'm not missing a thing.

deactivating facebook has been one of the best decisions of my life; it used to be a huge trigger for my anxiety. my mother is always like "you need to be on facebook for family!!!"

...y'all have my number! text me!!!

This is the only reason I'm still on it. I have 17 friends, all family and people who are really close to me. No groups, no community bull. Even still, can't stand it.

Most huge social networks like that are toxic cesspools. The world would be a better place without Facebook.
