Ball python hide

New to this, no snake yet just trying to find answers before. We bought a reptile cave does it need to sit on the floor of the tub to get warm or can it set on top of the aspen?

The substrate over the uth should be thin, no more than a 1/4 inch.

My son is wanting a pied. We are going to Repticon this weekend, hopefully he has saved enough to get what he wants!
