Incubation temperatures

Set up a homemade incubator from a poly box last week for one clutch eggs and the temperature in he egg box and inside the actual incubator is 3-4 degrees difference. Any ideas on why this is? I'm using collaborated thermometers, also done a search on google and can't seem to find much

Could be either evaporation of water from the media in the egg box causing a slight drop in temps or later in incubation the eggs will actually warm up the egg box.

There was quite a bit of condensation in the egg box when I've checked, I have put two 6mm holes either side of it.

Have you got any suggestions on what to do?

Ventilating the egg box is a catch 22. You can get rid of the condensation but will run into issues keeping the humidity where you want it. I don't worry about the condensation or the temp difference. I keep a temp probe in the egg box and set the thermostat in the incubator at what ever temp I have to in order to get the egg box temp where I want it.

Whats the temperature of the incubator and what is it inside the egg box?
BTW you want as close to 100% humidity as you can get.

It's 31.5 in the egg box and the temperature in the incubator is 34, the humidity is sat at 95% inside the egg box

There will always be a difference between the temp in the incubator and the temp in the egg box, what matters is obviously the temp in the egg box.

The probe placement plays a big part, I recommend to set a dummy box (set like an egg box medium etc without the eggs) and put the probe in that dummy box (tape on the lid inside) and place the dummy box in the center of the incubator.

People often ask why and the reason is simple toward the end of incubation the egg temp will rise (so you do not want to place your probe in an egg box full of eggs), you also get a more accuracy and have to play around less when you setup a dummy box vs having the probe in the incubator itself.

I recommend that the temp in the egg box be no higher than 31.5 that gives you a little room temp wise.
