high humidity vs damp inclosure

i had a brain wave while laying in bed and i needed to get up and ask. its bad to have high humidity for an extended perios of time, but it seems as though u can have an ambient humidity level that is high but the substrate and other odjects in the tank are not damp at all. so my question is....would a high humidity level be risking your snake to unhealthy conditions if the contents in the cage are not damp.

My thoughts on that are that the higher humidity, even though things not are not damp, would still lead to slightly higher risks of RI. I kinda relate it to the heat index. When you have the same temps but higher humidty it increases the heat index and results in those code red days where people are at a higher risk for health problems. I could be completely wrong, but I would rather not take a chance, but that's just me. :D I wonder what everyone else thinks?

I wish I could find the thread back in the high heat of early Michigan summer when I asked this very thing Christie! We had awful humidity here at that time and even with fans running nothing much was dropping for us or the snakes.

I posted here same sort of thing...high humidity but no dampness in bedding or condensation on the tub. Adam responded that it was okay to have high humidity for periods of time (not always) as long as there was no condensation (therefore good air exchange). Darn wish I could find that thread!

Lucky enough our humidity didn't stay awful for too too long this year.

I'm just a very nit picky person, and if I can possibly do something to keep the numbers in the right area then I want them there. I can't help it, really. :rolleyes: I have issues. :giggle:

Oh heck me too Christie. Why do you think I started that thread LOL. Our problem is that we get very high humidity somedays here in lovely northern Michigan. Since we live in an almost 100 year old log house w/o central air, there's not much we can do for the ambient humidity in the whole house let alone in the snake's tubs. I watch them like a hawk tho when it's so humid, for any signs of damp bedding or condensation.

Yeah I'm having whole issues with heat index, since my son makes us walk to school. That's 3 miles a day total (for me) in like 100+ heat index temps, and I'm just sure one of these days I'm just gonna drop! UGH! That humidty is a killer for me and I figure it's gotta work similar to the snakes. Healthy animals probably not affected much, but those that arent' might (?) have a higher chance? I don't know I'm just babbling. I'm still recovering from this first week of school! ;) :D

Ok, so what's considered "high" humidity? Or more appropriately, what's a good humidity to strive for?

60% most of the time upping to around 70% during shed.

Aim for somewhere between 50 and 60%. That is ideal. 70% for shed, although I usually just use humid hides and the occasional mist.
