Grandson's Ball Python has survived his stay with Grandma, and now it's time to drive him in my little suv to his new home in Chicago next week. What is the best way to keep him in healthy range of temps? Given normal late July temps I'll run AC in the car for the 9 or 10 hr (no overnight) trip. He just finished a good molt and has one full meal in his belly, 5 days before trip. Does he need a heat pack? I'm concerned about overheating at stops and chilling the rest of the time.

I'd take a digital temp gun (12 dollars off eBay / Amazon ) and a few of those cheap disposable heat packs then your sorted .

You can pack the snake up like you are going to ship it for transport. This time of year you definitely do not need heat packs. Reptiles are better kept on the cool side rather than the warm side while being transported. Keep the AC running in the car, keep the box on the seat and out of the sun. Take the box inside if you are going to stop for any length of time (like to eat a meal). If you need a quick bathroom break it should be okay left for a few minutes in the shade (but only a few minutes!). Cars heat up really quickly in the summer heat, so be aware of that.
