Water Treatment

Hi everyone - another quick assumption check...

What does everyone do for treating drinking water for your snakes? When I got my first BP the nice lady at <insert chain pet store here!> said to use Repti-Safe as a water treatment. I've been using it religiously for drinking wather, misting water, soaking water, humid-hide water, etc.

Lately I've been storing water (untreated) in the snake room in a water-dispenser like you would put in your fridge, then I treat it and use it for drinking etc.

We've not had any issues that I'm aware of, but I thought I'd ask the group what other options are out there.

Repti Safe is made for- well, the animal type you see on the label.... a water turtle. I would not personally use it for snakes, there really is no need to do so. I have given my snakes tap water right out of the faucet for years with no ill effects. If you are really worried about your tap water for some reason, I would let it sit in bottles for a minimum of 24 hours at room temp , the chlorine evaporates. Furthermore, there should not be toxic ammonia in water out of your tap, if there is, I would call your water supplier and start to complain. The product claims to provide "essential ions and electrolytes".. my question is, what ions and electrolytes and does the snake need those, do they pose a risk with extended use? This product is not made for snakes...

I use regular tap water. I started off with that, but now I'm just a plain ole water gal. I usually put it in an jug to let the minerals settle out, but otherwise I don't treat the water any more.

i use water that i leave stting out for 24 hours that way the clorine(sp) will evporate(sp) out of it

Total rip off!

Over the last 25 years I have used both city water and well water straight from the tap for my ball pythons and they are all thriving!

Save your money!

ha ha....i use 1 gallon jugs of water for my bps (only like 30 cents). I then refill the jug with city water when they are empty. The jugs keep me from having to walk to the nearest sink to fill a water bowl and spilling water everwhere on the way back to the snake cage :P

This poll was done about almost 2 yrs ago on here and most said they just use good ole tap water.
I use reptisafe just because i always have from day one. It isn't just for turtles. It is just a water condition that takes out the chemicals in tap water and has some electrolytes in it.
Heck I don't even drink the tap water from Fairfax cty I sure wouldn't want my Ozzy drinking it :)

Just think of the water sources they drink from in the wild, I am sure tap, well etc won't hurt'em. Long as you keep it fresh it's all good.
