Having trouble with RHP and temperature changes

Okay so I was all hyped to get these RHPs but have had nothing but trouble with the temps in my T10.
The temperature in our bedroom is warm right now, around 75- 79(this is where the boas cage is). The temps on the cool side of the cage are 83, the temps on the warms side are also 83 with the floor under the RHP 84. If I bump up the temp to create a hot spot its going to overheat the cage.
I have a 80 watt RHP on a Herpstat 2. The probe is in the back of the cage hanging about 2 inches off the floor.
When it was cooler weather the cool side was 81 and the hotspot was in the high 80's and seemed to fine for her. She rarely moves from the cool side even after eating.
I wonder if I should get a smaller RHP?
I really wanted to get away from Flexwatt which ive always used, My dh feels its unsafe.
I just cant figure out what Im doing wrong. Maybe Ive got the Herpstat set wrong?

Those numbers are fine. I wouldn't worry about it.

I have similar issues in the warm months here in Texas. I actually turn off my rhp most of the year and only use them during cold snaps.

I do have uth as well but most of my snakes don't use it. Keeping the room at 77-83 works for them. In fact all my snakes have a heat source and usually none of them are using them when I check on them.


Another issue you can run into with rhp is when you stack the cages the rhp below can create a hotspot on the floor above. Using them you have to find the delicate balance.

So should I just shut it off? I have an Ultratherm mat I could use for a hot spot but not sure if it would work under the cage? I have pieces of 11 inch flexwatt as well.
I was hoping that I could avoid a uth thats why I got the bigger RHP.

There are plenty of keepers that offer nothing but a good ambient temp. If your room is going to stay within a good range neither is actually necessary.

To answer your question either of those will work. I use ultratherms under mine. I like them more than Flexwatt as I find it easier to deal with under a cage.

I use RHP's in my T10's controlled by Herpstat as well. Temp for my bp is set at 81 or 82 (sorry I'm not home right now) and my ambient temps are usually 78-80 and hot spot ranges from 85-87. She's rarely on the "hot" side except after a meal and then it's for only an hour or so. She hangs in the cooler areas and at night usually comes out to the basking shelf or by the door. My boas have temps set at 83 and usually the ambient temp is 82-84 and hot spot 87-90. They also like the door or basking shelf.

Hey BR8080 , I like the black pvc gym you have in your cage. Did you make that yourself? Is it painted or do they have black pvc?

Thank you. Made it myself - got the PVC from Home Depot - you have to order it online.

Where in the Midwest are you? I'm originally from Chicago.

By midwest I am talking belly button of the US, Kansas:rolleyes:
Im going to have to make a pvc gym now, the black looks so much better then the standard white pvc.
