Heat problems
So I recently moved Paris into a taller tub for more climbing opportunities, and I'm having some trouble getting his warm side up to temp. I've got a 60 watt CHE from above, and a regulated heat pad set to 98F underneath, but under his warm hide it won't get above 80F and that's... way too low. Does anyone have suggestions for how to get the temp up under there? Should I get a higher wattage bulb?

What's your ambient temperature in the room? What sort of heating pad? How thick is the cage floor - is the pad too far underneath the floor of his hide perhaps?

Re: Heat problems
It's a ZooMed medium pad I think. I've got him in a plastic tub that's maybe half a centimeter thick, and on coconut substrate. I've tried thinning out the substrate but I haven't noticed too much of a difference.

What are you using to measure that temp? And are you measuring above or below the substrate against the bottom?
You should be using a temp gun to measure the temp against the bottom surface of the tub, below the substrate, which shouldn't be higher than 93~94, because snakes will move under the substrate.

Re: Heat problems
Is the heat pad the same one from the smaller tub? If so it might be to small.

You are taking your temperatures UNDER the substrate right?

I've got a temp gun yes, I'm measuring both above and below the substrate - 96F under, and 80-84F on top. If it's too cool on top though, isn't that forcing him to burrow?

The new tub's got the same footprint, it's just taller rather than wider or longer. I might see about getting a larger head pad though now that you mention it, that might help solve the problem.

96 under is too hot. Lower it about 3 degrees.
They naturally burrow.
