    I do too. They seem so miserable, especially when they totally disappear to their hide and don't come out except to shed.

    My Kingsnake is the absolute worst during shed. He turns into a jerk (not that I blame him) and will lunge at my hand despite being an absolute sweetheart typically. He's never even attempted to strike when not in shed (barely got a tail rattle one time), but even just reaching into his enclosure to change his water, spot clean, etc... is a challenge at times when he is in shed.

    It must be pretty miserable for them if it changes his behavior this drastically.
    I feel bad for them as well.

    It may be partly discomfort, but it may also just be the impaired vision. When you're half-blind and a meal for many predators, it's not unreasonable to get a bit defensive.

    That's why I always talk to my snakes whenever I open the cages. Even though they don't hear like most animals, they at least feel familiar vibrations which I believe helps shun defensive behavior. I always gently touch them as well, except during shed.
