What size tub and are you willing to go with a lid-on design?

I use 1.5" x .5" x 8' reject wood from home depot to build racks. I usually costs around 89 cents per 8 ft. I get 18 adult tubs in a rack with my design. I use hefty tubs with the lid on.

A couple of my racks. Not real pretty but they work well. Build cost per unit is actually less than thirty dollars. I spend more on screws than wood. Takes about an hour for two people to build one. Baby racks are a similar design.

Actually THIS is nice. No solduring of the tape and the rack right out of the box.
BUT I think his tubs will cut the heat cable eventually no?

I tried out of the box wire racks. Didn't work for me. Either had wasted space or adjustment issues. I wasn't happy with my setup until I built something specific to the task. The amount of animals you intend to own, the space, and the money you want to spend in will dictate your options. You are correct, he is going to have issues with his wiring. It is not going to stay in place, the ties are going to catch on the tubs, and he is going to lose heat to the metal rack which is going to act like a giant heat sink.
