    My rats are dieing off?
I purchased a male rat from a person store and I believe he got all my females sick they shortly died off after introducing him. I cleaned out the cage and washed out the bowls and water bottle. Put a mouse in the cage Saturday barley made it a day before it died any thoughts or suggestions?

Yes the male rat was the first to die the rest of the rats I've been getting from the same guy I always have. I used a natural soap I thought bleach might be a bit strong but I'll give it a shot.

give us a run down of what you are using for the entire setup. I'm talking bedding, food, cleaning agents, everything.

I breed rats as food and pets and have not had any fatalities. If you placed a mouse in that enclosure and it died within 24 hours you have a serious issue on your hands. My 2 guesses are either:

    1. Something you are using in your setup is highly toxic. Be it your bedding, or the soap you used to clean everything.
    2. you are dealing with one hell of an ugly viral infection. This one is a little more unlikely but still possible if your rodents are dying that fast.

New rats, like snakes, need to be quarantined. Bio-security is important for pretty much EVERY animal you will bring into your home.

I had a problem with my rats dying about a year ago, I tried antibiotics, several kinds, and still had lots of them die. I was ready to gas them all and start over. I was throwing out dead rats every day. Turns out it was my bedding. I used a cheap pine bedding from the feed store and it was very dusty. I did some research and found out that dusty pine bedding is super toxic to rats. I since switched to shredded paper from work, it's free and my deaths immediately stopped. I only had about two deaths in the last year out of literally hundreds and hundreds of rats (maybe thousands), and I'm guessing they were the older sick ones from when I used pine bedding.

Whenever you get a new animal always quarantine it just in case! Or else you risk your entire collection dying off like your female rats.
