what is (temperature) too hot heat mat for ball python?

And i mean the temp that the laser temp gun will show meaning the temp that the animal will be in touch with

If you provide your BP with a hot spot the hot spot can be between 86 to 92 with very little fluctuation that means you MUST have a thermostat to regulate your temperatures.

Some keep them on the cooler spectrum (I do) 86/88 and some on the higher end of that spectrum 90/92

my thermostat fluked over night and he was on 98 after eating overnight.
Any problem might happen you think? Thanks

Those are notoriously known to fluctuate and fail, and when they fail they fail wide open, I would highly recommend you to switch to a RELIABLE thermostat and make sure it is correctly set up (probe directly on the heat source outside the enclosure)

You should be ok. 98 won't burn a snake, if that's actually the hottest it got. But think about it, you hold your snake without issues and think about your temperature? Doesn't seem that hot anymore right? It's too hot for long term but one night of 98 should not burn the snake. The problem with heat mats and tape is the heat is not always consistent. That's why most like to set their thermostat on the lower side so if you have 5 degree fluctuation, the animal still won't get burned. The problem with no thermostat is they could have a hot spot that gets well over 100. Just get a new thermostat on it before you turn the heat mat back on.
