Heat mat thermostat

Does any one know if a jump start thermostat is compatible with a zoo med heat mat? The jump start reads 94F but it doesn't even feel hot on my hand??

Use a temperature gun....... Correct temperature isnt going to feel warm to you. Your snak is cold blooded so it will feel realy warm to them.

your body temp is around 98.6 so 94 isn't hot to the touch. I have a zoo med on a jump start, it works great. I have zoo meds on a herpstat and a zoo med t-stat. they are pretty bullet proof in my book. by all means go for a heat gun, it really eliminates so many uncertainties. some are as low as $15.

Your hand isn't an accurate measurement, because your body temperature is much hotter than 94 degrees. You need to get a digital temp gun for accurate measurement.

I'm completely new here, but I have a zoo med UTH on a zoo med thermostat. With the thermostat cranked all the way up, it only got my tank to 74F right over the mat. I'm thinking my layer of sub straight might be a little too thick tho.

Yes they are compatible. And like others said, 94F is not going to be really warm to you. Buy a temp gun. Also my advice is buy a quality t-stat. It is the single most important item. My vote is for Herpstat but I'm biased as I have 4 of them and just placed an order for a Herpstat 6 today :) Also with belly heat, you want 1/2" of substrate at the thickest.

You do realize that heat tape or a UTH is not going to heat the air. It only provides belly heat. If your room isn't warm enough, you need to either add a RHP or a CHE. My advice is if your room is 78+, go with heat tape. If your room is below 78, go with a RHP or CHE. Also in the winter if your room gets a little chilly, you can use an oil heater for the room. I use one for my snake room in the winter if it gets really cold since I keep my house set to around 78F anyways.

And you want to measure your temperatures UNDER the substrate as it will be the hottest surface your animal can touch.

You want to measure the surface directly over the UTH, not on top of the substrate. Your BP will eventually burrow under the substrate and lie against the bottom and burn himself, if it is too hot.
