Just made my first personal 'protection' purchase!
From the background I come from, this is kind of a sensitive topic. My family never kept firearms in the house and never believed in keeping them. Well, in the past year or so I've taken in interest in shooting as well as have been beginning to feel the nee for some sort of personal protection. I go to VCU, in downtown richmond. The campus area is nice, but as soon as you leave, the area gets kinda rough. There have been a lot of burglaries and robberies lately, targeting students in the area.

All that said, I bought a Glock model 26. Its a 9mm sub-compact auto. Its the same as the model 19 except that the handgrip is shortened significantly. Those shoot very fluidly too, as opposed to dual action revolvers and the like.

Anyone else keep protection in the house or just as a general interest???

Let's just say that anyone entering my home univited will find that he has left his civil rights outside (and probably won't be able to reclaim them). : )

i think now a days it should be pretty much mandatory to have a weapon. u never know whats gonna happen when your asleep i keep knives under my mattress and it not being hunting season yet my guns are all put away in a vault but where i live every body knows i am the crazy fat white boy.I mean the society we live in now a days is just all about drugs/gangs/violence but what poeple need to understand is there are kids and elderly poeple who really cant do much to defend them selfs. so if some one does a drive by who is left behind kids and elderly poeple.i dont think a gun should be used unless NEEDED.because it is poeple who use guns in a negative ways who cause all of us outdoors men to be blamed. but you better believe if any body ever just walks in my house while i am asleep or i am there to see them break in only thing stopping them from geting shot is if i miss. and of course all my guns are watched very closely if hunting season is in and there are kids around after hunting season my guns go in a vault.

I have had a rueger P89 Special Edition for several years now and been through some courses. I didn't purchase it for personal protection so much...I live in a small town with few incidents. The worst I have had is a peeping tom...and he was dang lucky he took off running...and that I had to take time to get dressed!

Just be carefull...that's a no brainer I know. Make sure you register the weapon with the local law enforcement and maybe look into CCW classes if you feel the need.

I have shotguns, rifles and a wicked compound bow... All of my weapons are in the closet in my bed room, but they are only used for hunting and are never taken out or touched for any other reason. I love my guns...they are the most prized items that I own. As far a weapons go,if I will not hunt with it...then I will not buy it....if weapons are not used for hunting...then what are they used for?...to hurt people.

And a far a home protection, my shotgun can deal alot more damage to someone trying to hurt my family than any pistol.

VA state law requires you to complete a course before you can obtain a concealed weapons permit. In the next couple of months I'm going to take the course, not thinking that I'm going to carry it around all of the time, but just to really familiarize myself with all of the laws, safety, etc related to owning a firearm. Its just something that shouldn't be taken lightly, yet suprising enough of how easy it is to obtain one in the first place. I didn't have to wait but 20 minutes for them to run my paperwork through and I left the store with a weapon....kinda scary almost...
