Ball python can live in total darkness?

I have seen lots of rack system made of plastic which light can't pass through. This means that apart from feeding and cleaning, the ball pythons are living in a totally dark environment. I do think that they need some kind of light cycle, but with those kinds of rack system, I don't think they know when is day and when is night.

I wouldn't say it's completely dark, since most rooms they would be on have windows, and many tubs are clear or mostly translucent. I opted for display type enclosures, so they get some decent light during the day without providing a light inside of the enclosure. The rest of the enclosure is black PVC, providing security and still allowing for a day/night cycle. Because they're nocturnal, they don't need a very strong or obvious cycle. I find that even in low light cycles, they still sleep the day away and come out to do their thing at night.

I would say most tubs are clear but if you thinking of the tubs I think your thinking they are the freedom breeder style tubs and are solid gray. But usually those tubs are used with a rack that is open for are and ventilation on top. My snakes are in clear tubs and I have a light on a day/night time automatic timer, otherwise they would live in total darkness.

In the wild ball pythons mostly shelter in burrows and holes in the ground, and come out at night to hunt. I don't personally believe that they require day/night cycles because of that.
