Ambient temp
My house can get very cold sometimes, my ball pythons have heat pads, but i want to know is how you people raise ambient temperatures in your enclosures?

Re: Ambient temp
Im my 40B I use a uth and 75 watt bulb. Some of my tubs I have 11 inch back heat and some tubs have 4 inch belly heat. Actual room temp is 74 but with space heater I have room up to 82.

Re: Ambient temp
I use a 50-100 watt red heat bulb to boost my ambient temps on a few of my enclosures. I also have an electric heater that I use to keep the snake room (formerly the dining room) warm.

Re: Ambient temp
I was thinking of getting a red bulb, one of the smaller ones, and i will be getting a thermometer, thermostats and a temp gun soon enough to know the exact temperatures. I was thinking of only putting the lamp on when im home, but what do you think? Would the lamp dry out the enclosure? Is a red bulb a good idea? (I know they are for the night time but because i only want it for ambient temp and not for a basking spot i figured it would be good) and should i place it over the hide, in the center, or far from the hide? Sorry for the dumb questions, im worried that its too cold for my babies

Re: Ambient temp
CHE is best 60 watt for 10-20 gal.. Bulbs burn out sooner and i dont believe are as efficient. Place it on cool side for 76-81 ambient as if i remember you have a uth for hot spot already.
And yes they dry out tanks. They are hard on 10G tanks especially.. If your tanks bigger 20/30G long get a big water bowl to help and cover lid with plexiglass or tin foil if you dont want to spend $15 on plexiglass.

Re: Ambient temp
Thanks, i'll buy them soon and im gonna look into spending on the plexiglass

I got a big piece at LOWES for $20. They cut it for me into (2) 11"x23.5" pieces so measure the metal screen frame and it sits inside frame ontop perfect. I got the DuraPlex Plexi. It has a bit of Flex to it and wont Snap like cheap Plexi. Worth $5 more that cheap craps beals of you sneeze then you wasted $10-$15 hahhaha. (Trust me):D

if you insulate the enclosure you can use UTH's to heat ambient, but otherwise, you need more. i've given up on heat lamps/CHE's. I have taken the extra steps to insulate so that I can seal up the tank more and stabilize the humidty and temp. I like thermax insulation, it's got foil on both sides and looks decent. with a high wattage heat source you have to keep things open and that creates swings in humidity/temp, at least it did for me. the below set up is heated with two small UTH's, one under each hide, one set to higher temp and one set to lower temp via herpstate II. the UTH's are modified and placed inside the enslosure. here is a photo of my juvenile set up and the UTH. I also made a 40 gallon version that is housing my baby red foot for now but will be the next home for our BP, I plan to go bio active, planted in the 40 gallon since it worked so well for our BRB, which has relied on a medium UTH on glass, inside the enclosure (no problems for 2 years, steady temps and humidity, no burns). https://ball-pythons.net/gallery/fil...2/img_8212.jpg

Re: Ambient temp
Wow thats a really nice set up you have there! Congrats! And thanks for the tips

You'll never get a 80 degree ambient temp from a UTH if its outside the enclosure like they're made to be used even if you covered the whole floor with one.
Slither Seeker has a cool custom made invention that he can now use inside his tank so it effects his ambient temp (like a RHP) differently than what your doing with your setup.
Just want you to understand that so you don't try putting your UTH inside the tank as the snake cant be in contact with it, and the UTH itself can not get pissed on or washed with any liquid of any kind :gj:
